City Airport in London has been announced as the latest supplier to the World Para Athletics Championships that start tomorrow in the London Stadium at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

The airport has been providing extensive marketing support in the lead up to the Championships at the airport and to their customers.

City Airport, located just 22 minutes from Bank station in East London in the historic Royal Docklands, has been transforming in the past 30 years from an airport that welcomed just 133,000 passengers in 1988 – its first full year of operation – to a record breaking year in 2016 with 4.5 million passengers. The airport aims to remain an East London business at heart, with over 64% of employees coming from the local area.

Niels de Vos, Championship Director of London 2017 Ltd, said: “London City Airport has been the first calling point for many athletes, officials and spectators so it has been important to put on a special welcome. It is especially good to have the airport based closest to the stadium working with us.”

Liam McKay, Director of Public Affairs at City Airport, said: “London City Airport is delighted to be the Official Airport of the World Para Athletics Championships. We look forward to welcoming teams, and fans, from around the world to LCY, and back to East London, for what promises to be a spectacular festival of sport.”

This year will bring together more than 3000 world-class athletes from more than 200 countries, who will compete in 30 sessions across 20 jam-packed and action-fueled days as both the World Para Athletics Championships (14-23 July) and IAAF World Championships London 2017 (04-13 August) are hosted in London this summer.
