The R&A have announced that the British Open, one of golf’s ‘majors’ will return to St Andrews in Scotland in 2015. The award however was no surprise given that there is an informal arrangement for St Andrews, the so-called ‘home of golf,’ to host the tournament every five years.
St Andrews first staged the Open in 1873 and hosted the event for the 28th time in 2010, when South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen was the champion.
Independent research commissioned by the R&A and EventScotland, the country’s national events agency, found that last year’s event delivered a combined £100-million ($156-million) benefit to Scotland, with £40.1 million entering the local economy.
